Not sure where it is "failing", my nephew (6y old) is russian-english and +turkish and french in school (but yeah, russian/english his spoken language). He is perfectly distinguish when he is speaking english and when russian. Even when he is doing simple math - he is like "Can I count in English? It's easier for me". He likes numbers in English, but normal speech in Russian.
